The UV index scale
The UV index measures the strength of sunburn-causing ultraviolet radiation: 0–2 is low, 3–5 moderate, 6–7 high, 8–10 very high and 11 or more extreme. The World Health Organization recommends sun protection from a UV index of 3.
When is UV strongest?
UV peaks around solar noon and is higher in summer, at high altitude and near the equator. Thin cloud blocks only part of it, so you can burn on a bright overcast day. Water, sand and snow reflect UV and increase exposure.
Figures come from a blend of global weather models (ECMWF, ICON and GFS) served through Open-Meteo, and refresh every 15 minutes. For official warnings, follow your national weather service.
