How the AQI works

This page uses the US AQI scale: 0–50 is good, 51–100 moderate, 101–150 unhealthy for sensitive groups, 151–200 unhealthy, 201–300 very unhealthy and above 300 hazardous. The index follows whichever pollutant scores worst, most often fine particles (PM2.5) or ozone.

Where the figures come from

Values are taken from the CAMS (Copernicus) atmospheric model, not from a sensor at your location, so they can differ from a nearby monitoring station, especially close to busy roads or during wildfire smoke. The AQI is calculated from running averages (24 hours for particles, 8 hours for ozone), while the concentrations in the table are the latest hourly values, so the two do not always move together. For regulatory or health decisions, use your national air-quality service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good AQI?
An AQI of 0 to 50 is considered good. From 101 upwards, sensitive groups should start limiting prolonged outdoor exertion.
What is PM2.5?
Fine particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres. They are small enough to reach deep into the lungs and are the pollutant most closely linked to health effects.
Why does this differ from another app?
Apps use different scales, different averaging periods and different sources (models or local sensors), so the numbers rarely match exactly.
