Fog, mist and haze

By the WMO definition, fog reduces visibility below 1 km. Mist is the same kind of tiny droplets with visibility of 1 km or more, and haze is caused by dry particles such as dust or smoke. Visibility of 10 km or more counts as good.

Units in reports

US aviation reports give visibility in statute miles (10 SM is unlimited); most other countries use meters, with 9999 meaning 10 km or more. Ships use nautical miles. The live value above is a model estimate for the area, not an airport observation.

Live values come from global weather models (ECMWF, ICON, GFS) via Open-Meteo and refresh every 15 minutes. All calculations on this page run in your browser.
