Wind chill is how cold the air feels on exposed skin. −5°C (23°F) with a 30 km/h (19 mph) wind feels like about −13°C (9°F).

How wind chill is calculated

We use the formula adopted by the US and Canadian weather services in 2001: WC = 13.12 + 0.6215T − 11.37V0.16 + 0.3965TV0.16 (T in °C, V in km/h at 10 m). It is only defined at 10°C (50°F) or colder with wind above 4.8 km/h (3 mph).

Frostbite risk

Environment Canada gives these frostbite times for exposed skin: 10–30 minutes at a wind chill of −28 to −39°C (−18 to −38°F), 5–10 minutes at −40 to −47°C, 2–5 minutes at −48 to −54°C, and under 2 minutes at −55°C (−67°F) or colder. Cover your face, hands and ears and limit time outside.

Live values come from global weather models (ECMWF, ICON, GFS) via Open-Meteo and refresh every 15 minutes. All calculations on this page run in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the wind chill formula?
WC = 13.12 + 0.6215T − 11.37V^0.16 + 0.3965TV^0.16, with T in °C and V in km/h.
Can wind chill freeze water?
Only if the air itself is below 0°C (32°F): wind then makes water freeze faster. Above freezing, no amount of wind can freeze it, because objects cannot cool below the actual air temperature.
At what wind chill is frostbite a risk?
From about −28°C (−18°F), when skin can freeze in 10–30 minutes; the colder it gets, the faster: under 2 minutes below −55°C.
